With the recent release of Microsoft’s new version of their server Operating System (Windows Server 2012) the countdown is on for the release of their much-anticipated desktop operating system Windows 8 due for release on the 26th of October 2012. With a completely reimagined user interface that is heavily optimised for tablets and touch-enabled devices the operating system could appear daunting, however with an impressive list of features and benefits, we’re sure it will be worth the learning curve.
- Speedy Boot times: if you thought Windows 7 booted quickly, wait until you try Windows 8! Using new resource optimisation techniques, Windows 8 can boot on most hardware in less than 30 seconds from power-on, a significant time saving for your users.
- Online Service Integration: Windows 8 provides enhanced integration with your Microsoft online services such as SkyDrive and your Microsoft Account (formerly Windows Live ID). Common user settings are automatically synchronised so that your users can have a consistent experience across all of their Windows 8 devices, while integration with SkyDrive allows you to securely access and share your data on any Windows PC with an internet connection.
- Internet Explorer 10: Delivering full CSS3, HTML5 and hardware acceleration support (read: finally IE supports all those pretty websites properly!) in both desktop and Windows-8-style UI modes.
- Windows to Go: Designed to address issues with the corporate concept of ‘bring your own device’, Windows to Go provides users with an installation of Windows 8 Enterprise that can run directly from USB drive or removable media. Licensed under Microsoft’s Software Assurance program, Volume License customers should evaluate this feature to provide the remote access and consistent user-experience that we’ve all been asking for!
- Windows Store and Windows Store Apps: The portal for all of your touch-optimised apps, the Windows Store provides an interface for browsing, purchasing and distributing your ‘Windows Store Apps’ applications across your Windows 8 devices. With enhanced security features like application sandboxing, enhanced integration between Windows Store applications, and cross-platform compatible application support, the new Windows Store Apps are your interface to the rich world of Windows-8-Style UI services.
While we’re unlikely to see Apple-esque style queues in retailers on the release date, expect to see Windows 8 devices popping up swiftly around you in the coming months as early adopters explore the fantastic new features that Microsoft has to offer.
